Sutton's Sessions Successful

Teachers From Across Kansas Attend

June 23, 2008

Nationally recognized speaker, Kim Sutton, presented two days of mathematics workshops for Smoky Hill Education Service Center.  On June 16 in Salina, she presented “Putting Meaning and Motivation into Teaching Mathematical Content Using Differentiated Instruction”.  “Smart Math Strategies for Application of Intensive Content” was her topic for June 17 in Hays.

Her energetic, interactive workshops are always popular with educators, and people came from across the state to participate in her sessions.  Sutton's catchphrase “Talk to me, oh ye mathematicians,” could often be heard as she involved the participants in thinking deeply about the concepts and how they could draw understanding of such concepts from their students.  With music, visuals, and hands-on activities, Sutton involved the group as she modeled how the math concepts could be taught in the classroom.

Participants found that the workshop time flew by, and several commented that it might have been the best they had ever attended. Others said that they had never been to a workshop like this one because "it was so awesome and motivating."  They felt that Sutton was right on target to help teachers with math concepts that were tied to the Kansas Standards.  Furthermore, they appreciated the hands-on tools with a solid foundation to help students learn.
