Kansas Students Learn about China

Technology Overcomes Distance through IDL

November 21, 2006

During the month of November, students in several SHESC member schools have had the opportunity to learn more about China from graduate students at Fort Hays State University.  The presenters, all students from China currently living Hays, were able to conduct interactive distance learning (IDL) classes from the FHSU campus by using technology to reach students at the various school sites.

This project is a joint venture between SHESC and FHSU, and sessions were created for students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  In addition to learning about Chinese history, geography, and culture, students also had the opportunity to practice some introductory Chinese phrases and greetings.  Presenters used a variety of materials and instructional methods including PowerPoint presentations, photographs, maps, artifacts, and hands-on demonstrations to teach students more about China.  Students also had the opportunity to ask presenters questions at the end of each session.
